Just as we were beginning to fully enjoy and appreciate the brilliance of "Monsters", Finnish vocal powerhouse Saara Aalto graces us once again with sublime pop ballad "Domino", her second official submission for the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest 2018.
“Domino” moves away from the self-empowerment focus of her previous release to shed light on the initial chemical reactions that come with the start of a blossoming relationship. The feeling of being weightless around a significant other, their impact being compared to contact with a wrecking ball, Aalto and her producers have perfectly conveyed the uncertain, mixed emotions of reigniting the romantic flame.
Likely incorporating her own personal story into the songwriting and endearing vocal performance – Aalto is currently engaged to female life coach Meri Sopanen – the narrative touch amps up the drama and importance of the new single. “Two worlds collide, there are two hearts beating side by side, feel the spark, we ignite, turn my mind into an open fire,” she sings on the opening verse.
In context with Eurovision, “Domino” does fail in comparison to the perfect “Monsters”. Songwriting is kept to the bare minimum, as the track progresses it unfortunately does get more and more repetitive, however, Aalto can certainly entertain the “less is more” taboo on the live stage. In the end though, there just is not much creativity presented to see the song winning the entire contest.
The accompanying music video for “Domino” is a different story. Aalto transforms into a glitter gold goddess as two female dancers embrace in each other’s arms. The three-minute visual is primarily a chance for the artist to stunningly glare directly at the camera… but that’s all it really needs to be. Aalto looks gorgeous as she watches down on us all, hoping we find the spark we desperately seek. The whole package is visually powerful.
