We all know how dry the air gets during winters. Those dry cold winds drain the moisture out of your hair making it extremely dry and frizzy. For some, winter is also the time when they face dandruff issues.

Here’s a list of a few homemade hair masks that we’ve put together for your perusal so that you can take care of your tresses during winters.
For Restoring Shine: Strawberries, EggYolk, Olive Oil
You’ll Need:
- One cup of puréed strawberries
- One egg yolk
- One tablespoon of olive oil
Method: Blend the strawberries using a blender till you obtain a purée-like consistency. To this, add the egg yolk and the olive oil and blend it some more. Using a hairbrush or your fingertips, apply this mixture onto the strands of your hair and your scalp. Put on a shower cap and let the hair-mask get absorbed into your hair for about 20–30 minutes. After that wash your hair gently, and follow this up by applying your favorite hair conditioner. Rinse your hair using just water or use a mild shampoo if you want.
Benefits: If you are in search of a hair mask that can restore the luster of your hair, then this mask is your answer. Strawberries have antioxidants that add shine and moisture to your dry hair. Egg yolk contains a lot of protein that will strengthen your hair while olive oil will provide nourishment to your hair.
For Deep Conditioning: Yogurt, Apple Cider Vinegar, Olive Oil
You’ll Need:
- One tablespoon of olive oil
- Two tablespoons of yogurt
- Half a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar
Method: All you need is a bowl to mix up all these ingredients together. Whenever you plan to apply this mask, dampen your hair slightly and apply this hair mask only on the strands of your hair and not your scalp. Leave this hair mask on for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse your hair with some lukewarm water. Follow this up with the normal routine of washing hair – shampoo and conditioning.
Benefits: Irrespective of what the weather looks like, we always seem to find ourselves in a situation where we need to use a hot iron or curler to style our hair. In winter, the dry weather combined with this hair styling routine robs our hair of its nourishment. This hair mask is ideal for deep-conditioning damaged hair or dry hair. Apply this mask at least once in two weeks to reap maximum benefits from it.
For Avoiding Breakage: Avocado, Olive Oil, Honey
You’ll Need:
- Half of a ripe avocado
- One tablespoon honey
- One tablespoon olive oil
- 1–2 drops of any essential oil
Method: Take a bowl and mash the avocado in it. Then add honey and olive oil to it and mix it well. At the last stage of mixing, add any essential oil that you prefer (our pick would be lavender). This is mainly to make your hair fragrant. Apply the mixture on your hair with help of a pastry brush or a comb. Make sure you concentrate more on the ends. Leave the hair mask on for at least 20 minutes. And cleanse your hair normally.
Benefits: Olive oil and avocado contain essential fats and oils which are beneficial not just for your body, but also for your hair. These ingredients have the capacity of repairing hair that is dry and brittle. If you like to blow dry or style your hair regularly, then make this mask your best friend. Apply it as often as you can and save your hair from further damage.
For Strengthening Hair: Avocado, Banana, Coconut Oil
You’ll Need:
- One ripe banana
- One ripe avocado
- Two tablespoons of coconut oil
Method: Mix all the ingredients in a blender. If you have thin hair, then use just one tablespoon of coconut oil. Apply this mask on your hair and leave it on for 20–30 minutes. Rinse it thoroughly and follow it up by washing your hair with a mild shampoo and conditioner.
Benefits: Banana bread and banana cakes are definitely irresistible. But, if you’re trying to control such sugar cravings, you can just go bananas on your head (giggles). These ingredients have vitamin E and fatty acids that will make your hair stronger and healthier in absolutely no time.
