Retro pants trend is wide awake - Boston Herald Posted: 24 Apr 2019 10:54 PM PDT Every once in a while, along comes a fashion moment that we just have to address. The most recent one came courtesy of one of our greatest style icons, Diane Keaton. Starting in the '70s, the actress has been charming the pants off of America — or, rather, charming them into wearing pants they might otherwise not. Back then her "Annie Hall" style was menswear-inspired, funky looks that spotlighted button-down shirts, vests and baggy trousers. And as proof she hasn't stopped inspiring folks — including Yours Truly — she made a splash on Instagram recently in pants that sent one major message: "Go wide or go home!" Keaton's throw-down was posting a pic of herself wearing a simple black turtleneck along with high-waisted jeans that were as wide as any ever made by JNCO (short for Judge None Choose One — the erstwhile Cali denim brand known for its cuts of super-wide-legged pants), circa 1992. And what did she say about the pants in question in her post? Check it out (and don't mind the all caps; that's how Keaton writes all of her Insta-edicts): "REGARDING THESE PANTS, I WORE THEM ON THE PLANE. I WORE THEM IN THE HOTEL DUPONT. I WORE THEM IN THE DELAWARE ART MUSEUM. I WORE THEM ON A LONG WALK THROUGH THE WILMINGTON STREETS. I'M WEARING THEM ON THE TRAIN TO NYC. I'VE NEVER RECEIVED MORE COMPLIMENTS ON ANYTHING I'VE EVER WORN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE." Now, as fetching as the design may be, it's also unabashedly retro. Which means you'd think it'd be tough to find. But, in fact, Keaton isn't the only one who's on board the wide-leg train these days. Not only did celebs flock after her Instagram post, asking her who made them — everyone from Tracee Ellis Ross and Debra Messing to Lisa Kudrow and Gwyneth Paltrow. And Michelle Pfeiffer wanted to know — but designers have her back, too. Since it's one of my favorite styles as well, you won't be surprised to find that in stocking the shelves at my Wellesley boutique, Grettaluxe, I found plenty that I loved. When I came across Adam Lippes's Striped Cotton Wide Leg Pleat Pant, I snapped them up. Ditto Mother Denim's Tomcat Roller Fray in Sacred. And Dion Lee's Corrugated Pleat Pant. And, of course, I love the look for myself, too — as you can see. They're casual but funky, flattering and fun, and a truly iconic style statement — a gigantic one. Literally. |
Our view | Tip of the hat, kick in the pants - East Oregonian Posted: 25 Apr 2019 11:38 AM PDT ![]() A tip of the hat to Blue Mountain Community College for recognizing the value of a great instructor and being willing to invest financially in keeping him at the school. Chandra Kunapareddy, a chemistry professor from India, has been at the school on a short-term visa since 2017. When he came, both he and the school agreed he would teach until his visa expired in 2020. But after two years, Kunapareddy decided this is where he wants to be long term. He approached the school asking for help to obtain a green card. It's an investment of about $25,000 from both the school and the professor, and it's not the kind of money either have laying around. By all accounts Kunapareddy is an outstanding instructor, with rave reviews from students, faculty and administration. His story is compelling, and teaches more than just compounds and reactions. He grew up in rural India and is the first of his family to advance past middle school. Through education he has moved to the United States, earned a degree from Texas Tech and is now using his expertise to prepare BMCC students for careers in science. They could also learn a little something about the power of persistence and the value of education. The BMCC Board of Directors this week agreed to put down the money, even in lean times, to help Kunapareddy continue his American dream. We're pulling for him. A kick in the pants to House Bill 2408, which would hurt development in Eastern Oregon. It's certainly not a high profile bill in this session full of bold economic proposals, but it's another example of a well-intended idea having serious consequences outside of Salem. Cities like Umatilla and Hermiston have made great use of enterprise zones to attract big businesses to expand in the area. The program allows municipalities to offer several years of tax breaks in exchange for set payments. HB 2408 would add the stipulation that enterprise zone developments would have to pay prevailing construction wages. One of the advantages of developing in Eastern Oregon is the reduced cost of a workforce. An artificial minimum for that wage would hurt the incentive and give developers good reason to look outside the area — in Washington and Idaho — for a more conducive place to do business. We're all for giving local cities and counties the most effective tools for growing the economy. A tip of the hat to the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame on its 50th anniversary. The rodeo and night show have been the heart of Pendleton for a century. They set the tone for the ever-growing tourism industry in Pendleton and their histories are intertwined with the city and region. It's all thanks to a committed volunteer board and staff who bring that history to life. If you haven't checked it out, now is the perfect time. Admission is free for the year at the museum on the corner of Southwest Court Avenue and 12th Street. |
Carlos Santana's baseball pants are a strange fashion decision - MLB.com Posted: 24 Apr 2019 03:39 PM PDT Fashion requires experimentation to ever move forward. The modern jean came when a San Francisco miner wanted to make his pants stronger by adding copper rivets to his denim pants. The punk look came from adding some rips and zippers. JNCO jeans, the famously baggy pants from the 1990s, were invented by repurposing military parachutes into clothing.* *Note: This is not true. Baseball players like to experiment, too. The famously ripped Ted Kluszewski ripped off the shoulders of his jerseys to show off those 'ceps and players in the 1970s enhanced their silhouettes by stretching out their stirrups to create narrow bands of color running across their calves. Now, Carlos Santana has gotten in on the act by hitching up his pants well above the knees and ... well, I'm not quite sure what he's doing.
Is Santana trying to bring back shorts to baseball? Does he wish that he could turn his baseball pants into a sweet pair of cutoffs? (Alternately known as borts -- short for "baseball shorts.") So, what say you: Is the future of baseball in short pants? Or is Santana's look going to be like the boot cut jean -- relegated to the dustbin of history? Michael Clair writes about baseball for Cut4. He believes stirrup socks are an integral part of every formal outfit and Adam Dunn's pitching performance was baseball's greatest moment.
